popsicles + purple cake = my birthday!

Today is my birthday.  Mondays are not the best days to have a birthday so I'll share with you my birthday weekend...

my cute mister and me!  he's the best. can't wait to hang with him tonight.

it's always hot around my birthday, but holy crap.  110?  Really?  Thank goodness it's raining today.

Friday evening, my sweet friend Amanda made me some rosemary lavender salt scrub... the best part about this?  the yoga poses shrinky dinks!  Makes me want to time travel to 1986 for a few hours and play shrinky dinks with my 8 year old self.

after we had dinner with our favorite couple, we drove over to this new popsicle joint in town called Steel City Pops.  They have some pretty great flavors.  I got banana, which had cinnamon in it, which was amazing.

We went back on Sunday and I got pineapple jalapeƱo.  Equally amazing.

let's just skip over to Sunday.
I made my own cake (I always do... I like baking my own birthday cake)
My sister-in-law, her boyfriend and his roommate (formerly my husband's roommate) made dinner for us.  I bet you think we had Mexican... nope.  Pizza.

John and me.  Ready to do the birthday cake thing.

Ellen and me.  Let's blow out these candles.

Purple hombre cake?  yes!

and yes.
it's just boxed cake and food coloring.
no fancy instructions.

yay for happy birthdays!!
and feeling pudgy on Mondays!!

a vegetarian story.

after a pretty awkward lunch with my in-laws which resulted in a big veggie throwdown, I wanted to use my blog to say a few things about being a vegetarian.

AND hand out a few old meatless monday posts!

I have chosen to not eat meat for several reasons.  Before I gave it up completely, I was hardly eating it anyway, so it made for a pretty simple transition (minus the chicken burrito sharing the mister and I would do at one particular super large burrito serving restaurant in town... he's still a little bitter about that).  I always was very intrigued by vegetarians... even when I was younger, chunkier, unhealthier and couldn't dream of giving up steaks, burgers, Chik-Fil-A, etc.  Anyway, the quick version is this... I read Fast Food Nation and I quit eating meat.

I still eat eggs and dairy products, which makes me a lacto-ovo vegetarian.  I'm slightly lactose intolerant, so if I take in too much dairy, the belly starts a-rumblin' and I start to shut down a bit.

Speaking of shutting down, let's talk about this awkward family lunch.
I have not been eating meat for quite some time now... a few years.  For some reason, family forgets a lot.  A LOT.  It's honestly no big deal, though.  Most of my friends are not vegetarian so I'm used to searching for a way to take the meat out of the meal.

After the mother-in-law put bacon in the beans and the sister-in-law put cream of chicken in the hash brown casserole, I ended up with salad and a roll on my plate.  I really don't mind this.  It forces me to eat a little healthier and the salad was delicious.  Here are some quotes from our lunch...

"Can't you just pick out the chicken?"  out of the cream of chicken?  I still find a great amount of humor in this question.

"It's not like you have an allergy or anything."  true statement.  I'm also not allergic to roaches, but I think we can both agree that we probably won't eat a roach anytime soon.

"I want you to understand that your choice to eat meat is stupid."  well, that's just mean.  even if you're trying to be funny, which, in fact, you're not.  So maybe we don't tell people they are stupid for the decisions that they make.

"There is an overpopulation of white-tailed deer in our state and we need hunters to control that population."  Wow.  Where did this come from?  Okay great.  I don't remember telling you that you shouldn't hunt.  And if I did eat meat, I'd probably stay away from venison anyway.

As an in-law, I feel like I should be nice.  non-combative.  easy to get along with.  So I kept my mouth shut and tried to smile my way through dinner.  A tough thing to do when you are feeling attacked.  A couple of other family members tried to defend me, but it just turned into a heated debate that I felt that I was the root of.  It was awkward and I don't deal well with confrontation and conflict, so I got up and hung out in the bathroom... in tears.  Fun times.

So the meat lovers decided that I was upset about them eating meat.  No.  Like I said, most of my friends are carnivores.  I don't care.  It's a personal decision for me and I would never force anyone to go vegetarian.  It doesn't offend me that you want to eat meat or even hunt.  I just don't want to be the source of a heated argument.  And I certainly don't want people to walk on eggshells around me, so maybe I'm the crazy one??  could be!!

I want to start sharing more personal stories on this blog, so this is the beginning!
I love veggies and I love you!
thanks for reading... and any future advice on how to handle in-laws is greatly appreciated!

I scream.

seriously.  how often do you truly scream for ice cream?  maybe a yell.  or a statement... "I'd like some ice cream."  We bought an ice cream maker 3 weeks ago and have made a batch of ice cream every weekend.

The mister is a purist.  Just chocolate.  I want to make fun stuff, but he just makes a face if it's not plain chocolate.  BOR-ING (but delicious).

I finally convinced him to let me make mint chocolate chip last weekend and he reluctantly said that was cool, but he probably wouldn't eat much.

guess who was begging me to make more mint chocolate chip last night.
best flavor we've tried so far.

DIY: keep your duvet in place!

our duvet slides around in it's cover.  it drives the mister completely mad.  so I took it upon myself to do a little something about it. here's how it went down....

duvet, scissors, ribbon, sewing machine

first, let the cats assess the situation.

kitty cats approve.

cut 4 strips of ribbon (about 5 inches long)

fold ribbon and sew a loop on each corner.

then add loops about half way from the edge to the center on each side.
this should give you four loops across the top of your duvet.

like so.

cut four more strips of ribbon (about 8 inches long)
*kitty paw optional

turn duvet cover inside out and place it on top of your duvet and mark where your loops are.

fold your ribbon strips and sew onto your marked spots on the cover.
not a loop.   you want to be able to tie these.

okay this is pretty much it... tie and cover that duvet!!

now everyone is sleeping better!

we painted our piano!

The mister got this piano from a local church while we were still dating.
It was pretty ratty so we decided to paint it... green.

now it's much more fun to play!

veggie sloppy joes!

the mister requested sloppy joes for dinner so I scoured Pinterest and found this recipe

loaded with lentils and random spices.

I made 'em extra sloppy for ya!

I thought they were tasty, but he was dissatisfied so the next day we had veggie crumbles in canned sloppy joe sauce.  Then he was happy.  That's the important part, right?

one.

A year ago today we were gettin' hitched!
I'm so glad I found such an awesome person to spend the rest of my life with.
I couldn't think of anyone to match me more perfectly.
Excited to spend many more years as wonderful as the first!!

I love you, Mister!!!

love hangover

yesterday was Valentine's Day... just in case you forgot.
We don't really go all out for V-day and we didn't really plan on celebrating it, but I had a little pocket of time yesterday afternoon so I made some nutella rice krispies treats and cut them out like hearts.
Mister could live in a house of these things and he'd probably eat the walls down and be homeless.

We also got a nice treat from our new culinary school friend...

orange chiffon cake.
score.
she's going to make me fat.

apple cranberry pie

so the best thing about the mister's new job is that if he makes nice with the culinary students who work the cafe, they bring him beautiful pies like this for us to fatten up on.
apples and cranberries.
so delicious.
so pretty.

I may eat this whole pie over the weekend.
yeah I said it.

then I will run several miles.

2011 memories.

January - a special party just for my man and me.
these girls are the most incredible hostesses anyone could ask for!

February - lots of wedding prep.  Don't know how I could have gotten it all done without my friend Bethany.  This is not Oscar, by the way.  Her kitty is his doppelgƤnger.

March - the most amazing day of my life.  I got married to my best friend.

April - I got chosen to be the page turner for Pete the Cat, a book reading and signing that my brother and I took my nieces to.  This is my awkward face.

May - we were kinda boring during May.  However, we did make it to a party.  So here we are with our friend Burgin.

June - at the park picnicking and listening to the symphony.  Ah.  We're so cultured... haha.

July - I got a stress fracture.  Rocked the boot the best I could.

August - hit lots of rocks floating down the river.

September - the mister's birthday... his cake ended up looking like a glowing orb.

October - cheeky pumpkin month.

November - I took some fun pictures of the mister.  He started a blog.  AND he got a real grown up job!  It was a good month.

December - my family.  I love them.  I especially love cooking with them.

It's been a spectacular year filled with love, new beginnings and great experiences.  I hope you have a really wonderful New Year filled with light and love.  Happy 2012!
